This company was raised in Pasquotank County and was mustered into service on April 24, 1863, as Company E of the 66th NC Partisan Rangers, a regiment then in the process of organization. On May 3, 1863, Companies A, B, and D of the 66th Partisan Rangers were transferred to the 12th Battalion NC Cavalry, reducing the 66th Partisan Rangers to Company E and a company C that ultimately became Company H of the 68th Regiment NC Troops. On July 8, 1863, the decision was made to convert the partisan ranger unit into an infantry regiment to be known, pending the completion of its organization, as the 66th Regiment, NC Infantry. Companies C and E of the defunct partisan ranger regiment became Companies C and E of the 66th Infantry, The 66th then proceeded with raising additional companies in order to comprise a total of ten, the minimum number requisite for a Confederate regiment. That process, however, was still incomplete on October 2, 1863, when the five companies of the 8th Battalion NC Partisan Rangers, the four companies of the 13th Battalion NC Infantry, and Blackmer's Independent Company, Salisbury Prison Guard, were consolidated into a new infantry regiment designated the 66th Regiment Troops. For the next few months, some officers of the old 66th NC Infantry continued to refer to their nascent regiment by its former title; others believed that their correct designation was now 67th Regiment Infantry. It is unclear which of the two was correct. On January 20, 1864, two days after another new infantry regiment was officially designated the 67th Regiment of NC Troops the "66th/67th" North Carolina Infantry completed its organization and was mustered into state service as the 68th Regiment NC Troops. This company was designated Company A. The company functioned thereafter as a part of the 68th Regiment, and its history for the remainder of the war is reported as a part of the regimental history.
