Will of Matthias Madren







Madren, Matthias In the name of God, Amen. I, Matthias Madren, of the County of Pasquotank and State of North Carolina being sick and weak of body but being of sound mind and disposing memory thanks be to God for the same do this sixth day of April One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seven make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following: Item: Leave the use of all my plantation whereon I now live to my beloved wife, Rhoda Madren, during her natural life, likewise all the provision that is laid on for family use, likewise my riding mare named Gin and her colt and her riding saddle and one cow and calf. Item: I give to son, Malachi Madren, one-half of my land & plantation whereon I now live, that part next to John Stafford’s, one mare that is called his own and a new saddle, one feather bed & furniture to him and his heirs. Item: I give to son, Matthias Madren, one-half of my land & plantation whereon I now live, that part towards Herring Creek to him and his heirs. Item: I give to my son, Thomas Madren, one hundred acres of land, part of the Joseph land, that side next to William Casse’s to him and his heirs. Item: I give to my two daughters, Mary and Rebecca Madren forty acres of land, being part of the Joseph Madren land, to be equally devided between them two and their heirs. Likewise, I give to my daughter, Mary Madren, one negro girl, Mariah, and her increase to her and her heirs. Item: I give to my daughter, Rebecca Madren, one negro girl, Eliza, and her increase to her and her heirs. Item: I give to son, Malachi Madren, one negro boy named Jack to him and his heirs. Item: I give to my son, Matthias Madren, my negro man, Pompey, to him and his heirs. Item: I leave to my three children, Thomas Madren, Miriam Madren & Nancy Madren my negro woman, Philiss, and her increase to be equally divided them after their mother’s death. Item: Leave the use and labor of all my negros to my loving wife, Rhoda Madren, likewise my household furniture during her natural life. Item: I give to my two sons, Malachi & Thomas Madren one yoke of oxen to them and their heirs. My will is that after my just debts is paid that all my property that is not before given away in legacies be equally divided between my six children, (viz) Mary Madren, Thomas Madren, Rebecca Madren, Miriam Madren, Nancy Madren & Matthias Madren after my wife’s death. I likewise nominate and appoint my friend, David Pritchard, Junior, my whole and sole Executor to this my last will and testament in witness whereon I have hereunto set my hand and seal the date above written. Matthias Madren (seal) Signed, Sealed and Delivered in Presents of: David Pritchard John Stafford Anney Madren State of North Carolina Pasquotank County June Term, 1807 The Last Will and Testament of Matthias Madren, deceased, was solicited in open court by David Pritchard, Jnr., the Executor therein named and proved in open court by the oath of David Pritchard, Junior and John Stafford, two of the subscribing witnesses thereto, the said Executor appeared and qualified agreeable to law, Order that the will be recorded & letter of testamentary be issued.
