Rating - the basic rank (and corresponding level of pay) to which an enlistee was entitled by virtue of prior experience. Most black sailors were rated as landsman, or new recruit. Contrabands were generally assigned the rating of boy, which otherwise was reserved for recruits below age eighteen. Enlistees with appropriate experience were assigned the ratings of ordinary seaman (a minimum of three years' experience) or seaman (a minimum of five years' experience). The format for listing a sailor's information is: name, age, height, complexion, birth-place, enlistment date and location, rank, vessel and time of service.
